AMMAN, April 19, 2010 (WAFA)- Prime Minster Salam Fayyad and Jordanian Queen Rania launched the Madrasati Palestine initiative to combat the deteriorating state of education in East Jerusalem, yesterday.

Fayyad and Her Majesty launched the Madrasati Palestine initiative to combat the deteriorating state of education in East Jerusalem by renovating its schools under the supervision of the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs.

Fayyad expressed hope that the initiative would play a major role in enhancing the education sector in Jerusalem.

Fayyad said the vital sector of education in Jerusalem is in a miserable and weak condition due to the continued measures by the Israeli occupation

Madrasati  (my school), launched by the Queen in 2008, will soon see its programmes implemented in East Jerusalem schools affiliated to Jordans Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs. The Madrasati Palestine initiative entails carrying out maintenance on school buildings, expanding classrooms and attempting to make adjacent buildings part of the schools, in addition to training teachers in the skills they need to provide their students with a modern, high-quality education.

In her address, Queen Rania highlighted the disparity in funds allocated to education in East Jerusalem and West Jerusalem, saying that spending on education in Israel is many times higher than in East Jerusalem. She pointed out that only 50 per cent of Jerusalem children complete their education.

She said that although education is highly valued in the Palestinian territories, its quality has been declining, dropout rates are increasing, and there has been an alarming increase in the number of children out of school.

Today, Jerusalem occupies the news headlines and tops the agendas of summits just as it always has It will become more Israeli every day if we dont support its Palestinian identity starting today, she added.

The Queen said: Jerusalem is every Arabs responsibility. And for every person who wants to do more than pray, ensuring quality education for Jerusalems children is your way to help.

Director of the Education Department in East Jerusalem Samir Jebreel, said, there are 38 public schools in East Jerusalem. These schools are in dire need of renovation and maintenance, Jebreel said, adding that they are overcrowded and lack a proper educational environment. The city also has 61 private schools and 50 schools run by the Israeli authorities.

Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Abdul Salam Abbadi  emphasized that Madrasati Palestine would play a dynamic role in protecting the Arab and Islamic identity and empowering future Palestinian generations.
